Urgent Mental Health Care Centre

I recently visited the urgent mental health care centre on Grenfell st after receiving a recommendation from life line. I was an absolute mess when I arrived but was met by compassionate, understanding, diligent and informative staff, who really validated what I was going through. They made me feel as safe, calm and reassured as they possibly could. If you’re suffering from a mental health crisis in Adelaide I strongly recommend this centre over visiting an emergency room initially. They will help you get a clearer picture of the care you need and how to go about getting it.

Could not speak more highly of the punctual, high quality, lived experience informed, and empathetic care my girlfriend and I received when I took her there when she was in crisis. We were seen by a nurse and lived experience carer within 15 minutes, for better and more empathetic care than I've seen from ED or ambulance staff. They attended to all medical and legal concerns professionally, which allayed all of my girlfriend's fears about coming here. The clinician we saw was so lovely, she helped my girlfriend open up like I've rarely seen her do. The benefits we both got from just a few hours in the middle of the night were incredible. This place is perfect

I came here one night in a state of panic due to stress from a family member. The staff were very friendly and offered me snacks and other amenities. I did have to wait a while to talk to a therapist because there was a change over of shift (11pm). I do not remember the name of the therapist that saw me (she was in an electric wheelchair) but she was empathetic and helped me out greatly with the difficulty that I was going through with. I hope this place is able to get more funding.

I accessed this service after witnessing a traumatic event. I needed mental health support and someone to talk to. I cannot speak highly enough of the team at UMHCC. From the moment I arrived I felt warmth, care and that I was going to be listened to. The process was explained to me in relation to who I would see such as a peer worker, mental health nurse, clinical social worker and a Dr if needed. It was also explained what the service provided i.e. talk therapy. I was provided with timely support and relevant, helpful information and services I can access when needed. The follow up phone calls are also greatly appreciated. This is a brilliant service. Thank you to everyone from the team who I had contact with on Sunday afternoon/night 15/6.

Cannot say enough good things about this facility. Needed advice on how to respond to a psychiatric episode that happened out of the blue. I walked in off the street without an appointment. They listened patiently and put everything in perspective for me, and suggested measures I might take to get back to normal. Thankyou ...

Me and my partner came to use their services, it went like usual but the team took my partners puffer to put in the medicine cabinet and failed to give it back when we left. Accidents happen, but he called to inquire and was told he would have to make his way to Adelaide. (1 hour train ride, 30 minute walk) The following night, he was experiencing extreme breathing difficulties and we are not in the financial position to buy another puffer. I called them up to ask if they could organize a cab charge or any form of him getting there for his life-saving medication, and was told; "sorry, it will have to be via ambulance." So i have to wait for my partner to have an asthma attack, risk passing away, and THEN pay possibly thousands for the ambulance costs? (We are teenagers living out of care of parents, ambulance cover isnt even an option for us.) Paying the price of negligence is pretty dissapointing from a place i had such a otherwise good experience at.

Entirely misrepresented as a "urgent mental health care centre." The fact SA health endorses it, and the triage line encourages people in strife to go there is a joke. From the get go the staff were blunt, emotionless and seemingly poorly trained. After being taken to and essentially abandoned in their lounge space that is supposed to be "comforting" and "relaxing" when in fact it is heinously decorated with surface level, run-of-the-mill motivational quote posters better suited for a classroom or yoga studio. Staff were more than happy to just sit and observe with disgusted and judgemental faces whilst I sat there in a clearly distraught state. The "support person" you get to speak too, whilst very nice, unlike her colleagues, was again clearly extremely under qualified. The "help" I recieved was being forced once again to repeat the events leading up to coming there, being told that yes that does seem tough and getting offered and juice. Beyond being a terrible and unsettling place they make their attempt to hide this fact plainly obvious by littering pamphlets all over the place suggesting people place their feedback on their own private portal. Not only does this conceal the truth of the the fact the service is unequipped to deal with "urgent mental health" from the public. From what I have seen in other reviews this feedback is ignored, not followed up on. I think this is a dodgy tactic from a place endorsed by our public health system to avoid dealing with the actual crisis in mental health support in our community. I do believe there is a place for a centre like this, but serious investment needs to made in order for it to be an effective service. Rather than left as a poorly funded, managed and staffed facility acting as a facade for accessible mental healthcare.
