Hindmarsh Disposals offers a unique experience for those seeking vintage finds and surplus goods. The sheer volume of items available is quite impressive, providing a diverse selection that could appeal to collectors or those simply looking for something different. Their stock appears well-maintained, though a more organized layout might enhance the browsing experience for some shoppers.
The service is commendable, with staff reportedly helpful and approachable. It seems to be a place where you can discover one-of-a-kind treasures and possibly snag a bargain, though be prepared to sift through a substantial quantity of items to locate exactly what you’re seeking. It’s definitely a spot worth checking out if you enjoy rummaging.

Incredible customer service! So friendly and helpful even on a busy Saturday. Good range and prices. Will definitely be back when in the need of something they’d stock.

☆ 5/5
Incredibly overpriced — almost ridiculously so — which probably explains why there’s so much stock just sitting there. The photos on the website make the place look far better than it really is. In person, it feels untidy and unloved, with way too much clutter.

A huge variety of reasonably priced vintage items. The customer service was absolutely amazing. Definitely worth popping in for a look around to see what you can find.

Went in to look at fridges as advertised. Some ok stuff and staff seemed friendly, but they really need to clean up some of the junk. There is so much here you can barely walk through some areas, and some of it is broken and rubbish. Also do not open the fridges, many are full of black mould and you struggle to breathe after opening. Antiques and collectables at the front of the store are ok but definitely steer clear if you’re looking for appliances. They are mostly in dirty, gross condition, and still want high prices for them.

Always find something to add to my collection. It is great to have a look around, lots of different things for everyone – vinyl, jewellery, collectables, vintage glass, books, clothing, uranium glass, toys, etc. Photos of some of the things I have bought added to this review.

OWNER RENEGED ON SALE. Went there today, found a nice little boat/ship wheel for sale which i proceeded to buy. Had nice discussion about it with guy there and was about to make purchase when all of a sudden he changed his mind about selling – no explanation, no apology, just that he was keeping it! Who does that! Is he in the business of selling or not?? I voiced my displeasure and still no explanation from him. Even another customer there remarked “you can’t do that!”. The only thing i can think of is that he took a liking to it himself or maybe he thought he had under priced it?? If that were the case he could have been honest. I wouldn’t have been happy but i would have appreciated his honestly and maybe I could have offered more. The man has ZERO INTEGRITY. I will never walk into that shop again. Buyers beware!

It’s really difficult to come in here and not walk away with several things you didn’t know you needed but obviously absolutely must have once you’ve seen it. For example, a globe drinks bar, a book on fossils, a book on Australian gems, and of course, a tiny snail sculpture. There are also tonnes of really awesome vases, mugs, and random things. I had to physically restrain myself from buying another 10 items that I will go back for. They also do layby if you feel guilty for buying too many things at once or if you have stupid things like electricity bills to pay.

Gorgeous antique shop full of beautiful items across a range of budgets and an extensive, well-organised catalogue of old postcards and vintage ephemera. Highly recommend stopping by!

This is one of the best antique stores I’ve frequented. Catalogued like a museum & a gothic vibe like hanging rock meets an ancient library, you need more than an hour to peruse. One of the only places I’ve seen that has a library dedicated to flat merchandise of old adverts, photos, newspapers and anything that fits the medium. If only I could set up with a cuppa on a rainy afternoon, but we gotta keep the goods safe. Recently got myself a shell cameo necklace that’s so quant. Will always be a repeat visitor for as long as they hang around.

Love this store. I purchased a cute little woollen hat that gives off conductor/1800s vibe. However, the reason I’m giving three stars is because of the price.
Props to the lady for being understanding. I paid $22 which I don’t really know if it’s reasonable or not and asked the lowest, to which she said $18.
But anyway, it said $4 on the tag under the hat and it still is on the hat, but I just didn’t see the other white tag she showed me when I did purchase for it. How did the $4 tag get on the hat? No idea. I will come back anyhow if I’m looking for some things.

The Lady owner is slightly unfriendly but that slight issue is nothing compared to their book collection. Gems can be found. Prices are reasonable but the selection is excellent. I would highly recommend book lovers to visit the gold mine in the bottom floor. Very good shop.

I was able to purchase a ring via lay by. The lay by time was 6 months. Following one personal issue after another, it almost took me 12 months. The owner never once made it an issue, when I was able to make payment I did and not once did I feel like a person who couldn’t pay a lay by on time. Since then I have made other purchases on lay by, without any hiccups my end. Very professional, warm and welcoming. I love going there.

The Port Adelaide Emporium is a great Antique and Collectible shop to visit. They have a good variety of items! The proprietor is a very friendly and helpful lady. Watch out though I was accidently locked in her shop!
There are also if interested many coffee shops close by to visit before or afterwards visiting the Antique Centre.

I purchased a fireplace mantle via email from Peter and it was such a seemless process. Pictures well taken and useful information. Peter suggested a freight service and that was fantastic to deal with as well. Just easy.
The fireplace is honestly incredible and beyond reasonably priced – a steal if you ask me.

This is a reply to Rebecca Scuphams review
The reason the middle aged blonde woman kept saying what do you want me to say is because you were told that we did not have what you came for and you were told that we do not know where you would be able to source what you were looking for. You did not seem to understand she could not make a suggestion because there was nowhere that she could suggest! There was no hostility you were simply told that we were unable to help you and you did not like that. You were not followed to your car the sales person went out to your car after you had left the store and you were sitting in your car and you were crying. You opened the door and the sales person said to you that she did not appreciate the way you spoke to her and you were very aggresive and slammed the door in her face. If you are going to write a review for a business please get the facts right 🙂

☆ 5/5
A 1star rating is too much for this place. I had one of the most upsetting experiences I’ve ever had at a business. The middle-aged blonde woman I spoke to was very unhelpful, could not offer any kind of assistance with the door mechanism I needed to replace. She kept saying “what do you want me to say” when I asked for help and could not even make a suggestion of where else I could go. If you don’t know how to help, just say that, don’t treat customers with hostility. She needs to go to a customer service course immediately or to get a job that does not require manners or dealing with the public in any way.
When I tried to leave, she followed me out to my car, held onto my car door, and would not let me go until I was in tears. I was shocked and completely shaken. This behaviour is not just unprofessional, it’s aggressive and totally unacceptable. I’ll be telling everyone I know to avoid this place. Do not under any circumstances go to Stepneys.

No longer “Stepney Salvage” this shop is mainly filled with reproduction goods, many of which are from overseas manufactured origin. All goods are reasonably priced, and appear to be excellent value. This is a great place to find a fireplace, mantle piece, old style lighting switches and door knobs, mirrors, doors, old Adelaide photos and timber elements for your heritage home. They lost one star for me when I visited because the manager/owner didn’t take my query about origin of timber seriously: when I asked where the timber came from for some elements, his answer was “trees” (I’m not going to buy timber that has no confirmed source of origin). They also lost a star from me for moving away from the salvage business (I understand it is likely more profitable to be like Bunnings and import new stuff to sell, but salvage is important to someone like me who cares about re-use of building materials instead of buying new). I will however certainly visit again when I need a new heritage light switch!

We have been going to Stepneys for years. Sometimes buying nothing, just walking around having a look at all the nice things to buy. Frequently Asked Questions about Antique Stores in Adelaide
What types of antiques can I typically find in Adelaide antique stores?
Adelaide’s antique stores generally offer a diverse range of antiques. You can often find furniture from various periods, including Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco pieces. Look for ceramics, glassware, silverware, jewelry, textiles, books, and a wide selection of collectables. The specific offerings depend on the individual store’s specialty and inventory.
How do I determine the authenticity of an antique?
Determining authenticity can be tricky, but several factors can help. Examine the piece for hallmarks, maker’s marks, or any identifying stamps. Research the style and craftsmanship of the item, comparing it to known examples from the period. Be wary of pieces that appear too perfect or lack the usual signs of age, like minor wear and tear. Consulting with an independent expert can provide a more definitive assessment.
What are the average price ranges for antiques in Adelaide?
Antiques in Adelaide can range significantly in price. Small items, such as vintage jewelry or collectible figurines, might range from $20 to $100. Mid-range pieces like small furniture items or silverware sets can cost between $100 and $1000. Larger, more valuable items like antique cabinets or rare porcelain can easily reach prices exceeding $1000, and often much higher depending on rarity and condition.
Are there any reputable antique dealer associations in Adelaide?
Yes, there are. Checking with organizations such as the Antiques and Collectibles Society of South Australia is a good starting point. These associations often have lists of verified dealers and can provide a degree of assurance regarding their reputation and adherence to professional standards. They can also offer advice and resources for buyers and sellers.
What should I look for when evaluating the condition of an antique?
When evaluating an antique's condition, consider factors beyond just its appearance. Look for structural integrity – are joints solid? Is the piece stable? Note any damage such as chips, cracks, repairs, or fading. While some wear and tear are expected and add to the piece's charm, excessive damage can significantly impact its value. Ask about any previous restoration or repairs.
What are some of the best areas in Adelaide to find antique stores?
Several areas in Adelaide are known for their concentration of antique stores. The city center and surrounding suburbs like Unley, Glenelg, and Magill often have a good selection. Browsing along major shopping strips and exploring smaller side streets can often lead to unexpected finds. Online directories and local guides can help pinpoint specific locations.
What is the difference between an antique and a vintage item?
The distinction is based on age. An item must be at least 100 years old to be considered an antique. Items younger than 100 years old are generally classified as vintage. While vintage items can still hold value and appeal, antiques typically command higher prices due to their age and historical significance. It's a simple rule, but critical for understanding pricing and context.
Can I negotiate the price of an antique?
Yes, negotiation is often possible, especially when dealing with smaller stores or private sellers. Be polite and respectful, and have a reasonable offer in mind. Point out any flaws or imperfections that might justify a lower price. Researching the item's value beforehand can give you leverage in the negotiation process.
What should I do if I suspect a dealer is selling a fake antique?
If you suspect a dealer is selling a fake, document your concerns – note the item, the dealer’s name, and any relevant details. Seek a second opinion from a trusted antique expert. Reporting the dealer to relevant consumer protection agencies or industry associations might also be considered. It's important to protect yourself and other potential buyers.
