Here’s a long overdue review for an amazingly tasty meal on 9th May.
Bar Cumbria and Kitchen is a small restaurant on the Grote St side of the Adelaide Central Market serving foods inspired from varied South American and Latin countries. The food is designed to share – though you may want to hog some dishes all to yourself!
Being small, bookings are recommended, particularly for larger groups. This was my second visit. It’s popular, and once you have eaten there, you’ll understand why.
We were lucky to grab a seat for dinner during a Friday night market shopping trip. Our host made sure we were looked after for food and drink, whilst making sure his staff attended the other diners needs. No one was left waiting long for anything that night!
We had a meal of shared plates: empanadas; patatas bravas; Argentinian steak and roast broccoli on a Lima bean puree. The wine and cocktail were also delicious.
The empanadas were lovely, crisp pillows of deliciousness. 3 to a serve with mixed fillings.
The Argentinian steak was perfectly cooked to melt in the mouth tenderness. A touch of char flavour from the grill.
The roasted broccoli was a serious treat and almost stole the glory from the steak! The Lima bean puree provided a silky accompaniment, and the crunchy seeds a wonderful textural contrast.
We will definitely be back!

Cumbia at Adelaide Central Market is an absolute gem! The staff are warm, friendly, and always attentive, making you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. The food is fresh, full of authentic Latin American flavors, and beautifully presented – every dish feels made with passion. A vibrant atmosphere, excellent service, and amazing food make this a place I’ll definitely return to and recommend to everyone!

Absolutely lovely food. There’s a little heat in the sauce, and chorizo but nothing unmanageable and there’s chilli oil for anyone who wants extra. The meatballs are light, the enchiladas are crispy.
For anyone who doesn’t wish to sit down there’s takeaway options out the front.

Thank you Cumbia for starting of our date night with a bang. Great atmosphere, delicious meals and super friendly staff.
Tha Caviche was a delicious start to our delicious mains of paella and chilli & crab Pasta.
To top it off, the service from Jherson was amazing.
Thanks team Cumbia

We are so happy with our dinner here…. The tasty paella… and the empanadas – we love the crust, not thick, it’s just enough and crispy! The prawn squid inked pasta is creamy and yumm!

Great music, great vibe. Lots of food and drinks options. Loved the virgin mojito with cinnamon sugar and grande burrito. Great presentation, even better in taste. Reasonable portion. It was quiet when I first entered and almost full when I left as it quickly filled up.

☆ 5/5
Well decorated restaurant, good atmosphere and decent menu.
The servers could be abit more engaging and eager to serve.
Birria tacos were delicious the filling inside was tender, I’ve never had them in a sealed fried tortilla though.
Fish taco was delicious, however Elote Mexican Corn was a let down, when brought to the table you could smell nothing but burnt.
Flavours overall decent, some let downs

Massive portions typical of Mexican restaurants – great for sharing! Everything was hot and very fresh, filled with ingredients, with lots of taste, and different textures. Frozen margarita was great, and would like to try the margarita cocktail tower next time!

Their server was very nice and the atmosphere of the restaurant was radiating and warm. I was travelling for work and I really found a delicious restaurant that was opened near my hotel and I was really happy with what I got. Definitely another visit when I’m back in Adelaide.

I recently visited the restaurant after hearing some great things from friends—and it definitely lived up to the hype! From the moment we walked in, the warm and colorful decor set the mood. It had a cozy, authentic vibe, complete with Mexican music playing softly in the background.
The staff were friendly and welcoming, offering helpful suggestions from the menu. We started with the chips and guacamole—super fresh, with just the right kick of lime and cilantro. For mains, I had the cauliflower tacos. The tacos were hands-down the highlight: perfectly cooked cauliflower, with some salad and vegetables and soft corn tortillas that tasted homemade. Highly recommended and the best place if you crave for authentic Mexican food.

It’s rare that I’ll give low stars to a restaurant I feel this is required so that it helps you improve!
Firstly the location was nice and the setting was nice. I was intrigued by the 4.7 stars and the restaurant was full early for a Friday, so normally they are good signs.
We were asked if we wanted water to start, normally it’s free… $4 for still or $7 for sparkling which came to our attention later because we hadn’t read the menu yet! Believe those prices aren’t worth it.
Food – The tacos really had the smallest amount of filling, practically felt like the top two quarters were just the bread. We also had Nachos, in which would had been the smallest serving I’ve had out of any proper Mexican restaurant. The chorizo sausage reminded me of the meat you would put on a dominos pizza indicating poor quality of choice, in which when I read your reviews after someone commented the same 4 months ago.

Every day feels like an alcoHoliday when I come to this place! It never fails to impress me with their amazing cocktails.
I usually go for the spicy “Orange Jalapeño” Margarita or the sweet-and-sour Classic Mojito. But tonight, instead of having cake after dinner at one of the restaurants nearby, I decided to head to Mexican Society for some liquid desserts, and it was the best decision ever!
I had the Lychee Margarita, Cola-Di-Da, and a special Amaretto Sour.
(They don’t actually have an Amaretto cocktail on the menu, but because I’m such a huge Amaretto fan, they whipped up a sweeter version just for me!). Every single cocktail completely made my night.
As a dessert lover, I’m now officially convinced by this place that a few glasses of cocktails can definitely be better than a plate of cake!
Cheers to that!

The barramundi tacos is amazing!!!!
The duck nachos is huge and so tasty with loads of very aromatic spices that must be from the Indian influence!! I love the fusion!
Ps: the lychee margarita is a must!!!

Food was pretty good and so were the drinks. However we ordered a feed me menu at 5:15. We had to leave at 6:30 for a show with only half the food having come out. They charged us for the whole meal and no discount.

This isn’t my first visit here, but I wanted to share that the quality of food is fantastic. The guys are always kind. I ordered the chicken bowl and it was some of the best chicken, ever.
I liked the options to sit outdoors by the street or upstairs in the enclosed area or patio. I sat upstairs on the patio. It was cold but worth the view of Rundle Mall.
Only downfall was the restroom access. It’s down a hall and you have to wait for someone to buzz you in, which in my case took a bit. Otherwise I love GYG!

☆ 5/5
Not up to the high standard I am used to at GYG. Slow service, run down shop, cold chips and overcooked chicken. Some of the chicken pieces were burnt. Wasn’t even given a bag the second time I went there.

☆ 2/5
First time we tried Guzman and it is quite nice.
For $9.20, the kids meal with burrito option is a good price and quite enough for an adult with a small appetite or a kid. The $3 taco was not so impressive- very empty with not much filling and did not look like the picture on the board.
There is indoor and outdoor seating upstairs but not wheelchair accessible.
The outdoor seating area is nice if you don’t mind eating with birds waiting for the leftovers.
Overall, I would come back, but next time I will sit indoors.

Just had a chicken bowl and veg bowl, way disappointed unprofessional front staff, feels like in no mood of working or taking order, cold chicken even the beans wasn’t taste fresh as well.
Not coming again for sure. You guys really need to teach your front staff how to talk to customers and if something is not fresh and isn’t properly hot enough. Don’t serve it.

I absolutely love Guzman and that’s probably why i order the chicken nachos almost every month. However every time that i have ordered it from the King William Street, Adelaide store the chicken comes over grilled, literally black like you’re eating carbon and today it was so dry as well that it literally made me choke.
I’m so disappointed by the quality and customer service. Despite sharing my concern with the staff they just ignored it.

I have been a fan of Mexican food but this one disappointed me.
I had Chicken Burrito and it was not like as I expected. It was too thin and gravy and beans didn’t taste well.
I used to eat from Mad Max and they have amazing flavour and taste. Guzman is also a big franchise in Australia but I didn’t like the food.
Overall, it was an okay experience so I am giving them 2 stars.

This is the second time I’ve been here. Great coffee and Mexican breakfast foods! The staff is very nice. Would highly recommend. We got the breakfast quesadilla and the smashed avocado on gluten free bread. Very nice.

One of the best Mexican restaurant we have ever been to. Ordered their taco, quesadilla and sweet potato fries and they’re all delicious. Clean plate all around. We have tried their Mexican chocolate and we were really wonderfully surprised with the hint of spiciness at the end. A perfect drink to cap the meal.
They also have a beautiful ambience partnered with an impeccable service.
Looking forward to visiting this restaurant again.

Friendly service for a morning coffee and a bite to eat. Staff are very friendly and efficient.
A great range of coffee flavours and some very flavoursome meals.
Atmosphere wise it gets a little loud and busy given the location off the side alleyway.

☆ 5/5
Really lively cafe with super friendly and accommodating staff, the food was awesome and has been by far the best of our trip!
We got a flat white and cappuccino to start off, and they were both made perfectly with a rich crema and smooth flavour.
The huevos rancheros was nice, especially with the smokey chorizo and some delicious hot sauce the staff offered to go with it.
The brekkie quesadilla was amazing, especially as far as Mexican breakfast food goes. The eggs were scrambled perfectly with bacon and Pico de gallo folded into it, and a delicious tangy salsa with some avocado and coriander on top. It was made even better with the habanero hot sauce though – if you like a bit of heat, make sure you try it!
Overall a great meal, coffee, and experience, it made for a great start to our day, and we’d definitely come back again and again for the amazing food and service!

We were a group of five ladies looking for somewhere in Adelaide to enjoy dinner, and we are so glad we found this spot! We all ordered burrito bowls and they were absolutely delicious — so fresh, full of flavour, and generous in size. A couple of us are vegetarian/vegan, and there were plenty of great options to choose from which made it easy for everyone to find something they loved.
A special shout-out to our server, Alexa – she was amazing! So friendly, attentive, and welcoming, she really made the whole experience feel extra special. She looked after us so well and added so much to the night.
Highly recommend this place if you’re after great food, lots of variety, and incredible service. We’ll definitely be back! ✨

Very nice atmosphere. The food is tasty with relatively big serves. The margaritas are “Aussie style Margaritas”, so I wasn’t sold. The first time I visited the service was excellent, but the second time it wasn’t great. There might be a bit of inconsistency with the service. Still it’s not a bad experience altogether.

Went here to celebrate a friends birthday. The bottomless brunch option is advertised as $75 each but on the fine print of another menu it says Saturday 8% surcharge so the price was $81.
I agree with another review they only let you order one drink and two tacos at a time. The margaritas are in very small glasses with ice in them so there isn’t much in each one. There were large waits between each drink because only one person on in the bar. Booked for 4pm. The waitress on was very friendly but overall the experience was disappointing and I don’t think that it was very good value for money

I don’t often leave negative reviews, but I left this restaurant feeling very disappointed. The food itself was fine, not terrible, but nothing to rave about either. Unfortunately, I also found a hair in my meal. While it was replaced, that experience put me off.
The bigger issue though was the service. The staff came across as completely uninterested and unhelpful. When we asked questions about the menu, we were met with short, dismissive replies. Any small request felt like it was too much trouble. The worst part was when we politely queried items on the bill
, instead of calmly explaining, the staff rolled their eyes and acted as though we were being difficult.
Average food I could overlook, but rude and dismissive service makes the whole dining experience unpleasant. There are plenty of better places to enjoy Mexican food where you’ll actually feel welcome and looked after. Sadly, I won’t be returning here.

Zambrero offers a convenient and relatively quick option for a satisfying meal. The staff generally seem well-trained and eager to assist customers, leading to a pleasant ordering experience. The focus on fresh ingredients is evident in the quality of the food, and portions are quite generous, offering good value for the price.

Customer Reviews
I am deeply disappointed by the service I experienced today. Upon my arrival at 1:55 PM, the staff member on duty displayed an unprofessional and dismissive attitude. Despite my timely request, she delayed my order for several minutes, claiming that she was “waiting for the nachos to finish cooking.” Moments later, she refused to serve me entirely, stating that her shift ended at 2 PM. After serving my friend before me she proceeded to scrape the remnants from the side of the serving tray which was completely dry, rather than providing a fresh portion. The lack of courtesy and unwillingness to assist a customer was very disappointing. I expect far better service from an establishment of this standard.

Zambrero Rundle Mall offers a healthy option in a pub and burger dominated eat strip. The service was prompt and friendly. Ordered a burrito and burrito bowl. Everything really fresh however lamb lacked flavour. Plenty of seating options both inside and out. Tables a tad sticky. A filling option that supports charity meals.

Yummy, filling and healthy food.
I got there at 2pm and it was empty, the young gentleman serving me was very professional and friendly. He was efficient with my order too.
The burrito I had was very filling and tasted great. I was suprised it was empty.
The athmosphere when walking in wasn’t very inviting. It looked a bit messy and dirty. This was the only downside. Otherwise great spot for a good take away. 14$ for a burrito that definitely fills you up is more than fair.
If you are in the area and don’t want to go to a pub then this is a good spot.

A friend and I just got a burrito and nachos from here. My friend has autism and is vegetarian, it was their first time at zambreros. Chloe was very accommodating and provided a lot of insight with multiple options, also helping by informing of what popular options were. Chloe was very patient and still managed to provide quick and beyond adequate service. Making the interaction a lot easier for those with dietary needs or disabilities :).

Customer Reviews
The service here is attentive & welcoming, but the food quality doesn’t quite reach the standard of other Zambrero locations. I’ve tried the burrito twice and found it consistently underwhelming. However, the best part of both visits was sitting by the window and observing the lively street scene on a winter weekend.

Best past food that isn’t completely rubbish and it’s great that it’s open very late, unlike all the other restaurants.

I love the burritos in zambrero . The best part is that they make it in front of you. It is very healthy. Even the quantity is very good. The grilled checken is very tasty too. Sitting area is small so mostly like to get it delivered

Definetely one of my favorite place to go for lunch. Their burrito bowl is to die for! My go to order are burrito bowl with pulled pork, and I usually add everything (rice, beans, corn, pico de gallo, sour cream, cheese) with salsa verde sauce, extra guac and crushed corn chips is a must!

Tiniest portions!!! The staff tries their best to not put any food on the plate. The amount of food that comes into their serving spoons, they don’t want to provide to cuatomers. I ordered classic regular chicken bowl and the bowl given to me was 90% lettuce, small bite of chicken and beans and in the name of salsa, 10 corn kernels the same amount of tiny dices of tomatoes.

Highly recommend the pollo, chorizo and pulled pork tacos!! My partner recommends the birria taco, barramundi taco and the nachos! We have not found one item on the menu that we don’t like!!
The service is excellent love coming in to see the friendly front counter lady every time we come in, I will never get sick of this place and tell everyone about how amazing this place is!
As a coeliac everything being gluten free is the best knowing I won’t get sick and the food tastes good!!

Best meal I have had in years. It was so hard to choose as everything sounds so tasty on the menu. Great place to share plates and try a bit of everything. We shared the nachos with pulled pork, the pork belly and fennel taco and then the duck taco. All the ingredients a so SO fresh, amazing can’t fault it. The service is also delightful and very welcoming. I am coeliac so had to email and ask some questions, they were so excellent with communication, and if you are coeliac – even better as everything is gluten free. Do you self a favour, if I could have given then 10 stars I would have

Grabbed a quick lunch after doing the markets and it was great to find a gluten free friendly place so close by. The Tacos were delicious (the two pork options being my favourite) and looking forward to coming back and trying the other ones as there’s a great variety. Fresh and flavourful, good portions and great service, I’ll be back!

The service is lovely and prompt. The atmosphere is relaxed. I loved the plantain chips, gobernador tacos (prawns) and spicy margaritas. The menu is 100% Gluten free. We were a big table and everyone got their meals at the same time. The toilets a bit hidden on the pub next door, so not the most comfortable set up but it won’t stop me from coming back again.

From the very first moment I stepped into Nina, I was greeted with a warm, genuine welcome that immediately set the tone for what turned out to be a truly memorable dining experience. Even as a solo diner visiting the area for work, I felt completely at ease in this gorgeous establishment.
The decor is a perfect blend of modern elegance and cozy charm – stylish without being pretentious, with thoughtful touches that make the space feel both inviting and refined.
The service was outstanding throughout the evening. Friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, the staff not only made me feel comfortable dining alone but also offered thoughtful suggestions that truly enhanced the meal.
Every single dish I tried was exceptional, beautifully presented, and bursting with flavor. It’s clear that each plate is crafted with both skill and passion. Nina is an absolute must-visit.
To top off the meal, I indulged in their basque cheesecake and I can confidently say it was one of the best I’ve ever had. Creamy, rich, and perfectly balanced – the ideal sweet finish to an already flawless evening.
I’ll definitely be back!!

Overall, we had a pretty good experience at Niña. One of our tapas (tuna) was a bit of a miss (individually, the ingredients were good, but it didn’t really work all together). The only other criticism was the lack of ventilation. We were sat on high seating near the bar (even though there were lots of free tables for our entire duration) and copped all the smoke / smell from the kitchen. That being said, everything else was very good. We particularly enjoyed the jamon flatbread and half chicken for main. We ate here at a discount which was worth the $ but not sure if I would pay full price. Worth considering.

The ambiance and plating at Nina are refined, and the service was polite, but the overall execution of the dishes did not meet expectations—especially considering the price point. Here’s a breakdown of what I ordered:
Hokkaido Scallop, yuzu-chilli butter, jamon: The scallop itself was fine, but the addition of jamon felt unnecessary and overwhelmed the delicate seafood flavor.
Tuna Escabeche Tostada, Avocado, Guindilla: Very average—nothing particularly memorable.
Txangurro Crab, Saffron, Chilli, Nori: The bread component was well done, but the sauce was overpowering and masked the natural sweetness of the crab.
Jamon Flatbread, Mozzarella, Hot Honey, Espelette: The flatbread was well made, but the mozzarella wasn’t melted, making it hard to combine with the bread. The espelette looked nice but didn’t add any flavor.
Cauliflower: Surprisingly the most balanced and enjoyable dish of the night.
MS3+ Flank Steak: Served cold. After notifying the staff, it was reheated—but that turned the medium-rare steak into well-done, ruining the texture and flavor. Lost all interest in trying dessert after that.
If you have high expectations when it comes to food, Nina may not be the best choice. At this price point, there are definitely better options in Adelaide.

A hidden gem worth discovering!
I stumbled across Ñina by chance. It’s a cozy, elegant, and modern Spanish spot with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, which made the experience even better.
I wasn’t super hungry, so I didn’t order a lot, but everything I tried was absolutely delicious.

The restaurant is located in the Adelaide CBD. The staff were super friendly and professional, and the service was good. I really liked the decor and the table setting. Their number of options for you to choose, we picked the set menu. Normally, with a set menu, you rely on the chef to bring you a selection of dishes. The combination of the dishes, based on my experience, was not quite balanced. I should add that the roast chicken was cooked to perfection. I really enjoyed the grilled cheese and the bone marrow butter. Next time, I will try to pick up the items myself. All in all, it was a nice experience, although within that price range, I was expecting a bit more in terms of flavor profile and items.

Loved this new Spanish inspired restaurant. Everything we ate was delicious and couldn’t fault any of it. I loved that there was lots of options and the food wasn’t too heavy but still generous. Hard to pick a fav. But the jamon toast was to die for, the Pedro brussels and the tuna tartare were also delicious. The Basque was also a great way to end the meal. Will be back for sure!

Frequently Asked Questions about Mexican Restaurants in Adelaide
What defines authentic Mexican cuisine?
Defining authentic Mexican cuisine can be tricky as it varies significantly by region. Generally, it emphasizes fresh, locally sourced ingredients, traditional cooking methods like nixtamalization (treating corn), and bold, complex flavors. Expect to find dishes using chiles, lime, cilantro, and a wide variety of proteins like chicken, pork, beef, and fish. It's often quite different from the Tex-Mex found elsewhere.
Are there many Mexican restaurants in Adelaide?
Yes, Adelaide has a growing number of Mexican restaurants. You'll find options ranging from casual taquerias and burrito bars to more established restaurants serving traditional dishes. While not as concentrated as some other cities, the variety is increasing with new places opening regularly. There are also many restaurants influenced by Mexican flavours.
What’s the difference between a taqueria and a Mexican restaurant?
A taqueria typically focuses on tacos and related dishes like quesadillas and tortas. They tend to be more informal and offer quicker service. A Mexican restaurant, on the other hand, usually has a broader menu offering a wider selection of dishes, including entrees, appetizers, and desserts. The ambiance can also be more formal or relaxed, depending on the restaurant's style.
What are some popular dishes to try at a Mexican restaurant?
There are many delicious dishes to explore. Popular choices include tacos al pastor, enchiladas, mole poblano, chiles rellenos, and guacamole. Don't be afraid to ask the staff for recommendations – they can often suggest regional specialties or hidden gems. Tamales are also a frequent offering.
What are some common misconceptions about Mexican food?
One common misconception is that all Mexican food is spicy. While chiles are used, the level of heat can vary greatly, and many dishes are quite mild. Another misconception is that burritos are the most authentic dish; burritos are actually more of a Californian invention. It’s also important to remember that Mexican cuisine is incredibly diverse and regional differences are substantial.
Are there Mexican restaurants that cater to dietary restrictions?
Many Mexican restaurants in Adelaide are increasingly accommodating to dietary restrictions. Many offer vegetarian and vegan options, often featuring dishes with beans, vegetables, and plant-based proteins like tofu or jackfruit. Always check the menu or ask the staff about ingredient lists and modifications to ensure your needs are met.
What’s the best way to find a good Mexican restaurant?
To find a good Mexican restaurant, start by checking online reviews on platforms like Google Maps or TripAdvisor. Look for restaurants with high ratings and positive comments about the food quality, service, and atmosphere. Asking friends, family, or colleagues for recommendations is also a good approach. Consider looking at local food blogs or online forums too.
Do Mexican restaurants typically offer traditional Mexican drinks?
Yes, many Mexican restaurants offer a selection of traditional Mexican drinks. These may include horchata (a rice milk beverage), jamaica (hibiscus tea), agua fresca (fruit-infused water), and Mexican soda. Some restaurants also offer Mexican beer and tequila or mezcal.
How does the price range typically vary among Mexican restaurants?
The price range can vary widely. Casual taquerias and burrito bars usually have the most affordable options, with prices ranging from $10 to $20 per person. More established restaurants serving traditional dishes often have higher prices, potentially ranging from $25 to $50 or more per person. Check the restaurant's menu online to get an idea of the expected cost.
Can I order takeaway or delivery from Mexican restaurants?
Yes, many Mexican restaurants in Adelaide offer takeaway and delivery services. Check their websites or online ordering platforms to see if they deliver to your location. Ordering takeaway is a convenient way to enjoy authentic Mexican flavours at home or at a picnic.
