I recently dined on the 30/8 and really enjoyed the experience. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious — the biryani in particular was a generous serve and close to authentic Hyderabad style. We had two curries, rice, 2 garlic naan, the biryani, and a couple of drinks, which came to $120. Prices are a little higher than your average Indian restaurant, but the quality, portions, and service make it worthwhile.

I had the pleasure of ordering takeaway from Chakna Indian Restaurant on Rundle Street in Adelaide and was absolutely blown away – not just by the food, but by the entire experience. From the moment I walked in, I was warmly welcomed by the owners: a beautiful family team of husband, wife and their son. Their friendliness and genuine hospitality made me feel like more than just a customer – I felt like I was a guest in their home.
I ordered the butter chicken and garlic naan, and let me tell you – it was divine. The butter chicken was rich, creamy, and perfectly spiced, while the naan was soft, flavourful with perfectly crispy edges. Every bite was a reminder of how authentic Indian food should taste.
What truly set Chakna apart was how the family went out of their way to ensure I was comfortable and happy. Their service was heartfelt, not just professional, and it added so much warmth to the meal.
If you’re in Adelaide and craving Indian cuisine that’s full of flavour and served with heart, do yourself a favour and visit Chakna! It’s not just a meal – it’s an experience.

Chakna is an amazing experience, have been eating regularly there since they’ve opened. For a new business I’ve been surprised at how high the quality of their food is, the chef’s and staff know how to make great Indian good. Also as a cocktail/drink lover their bar set up is stunning. I appreciate the restaurant’s attention to detail on the design and atmosphere, and they are in a beautiful location too, on the classic Rundle Street precinct. The business is very inclusive and accommodating to all people, you’ll see an array of people enjoying food and drinks which is something I personally love seeing. Family run, they are very passionate, and the staff are great and personable. What else can I say. Chakna, keep it up because you are a sleeping giant in the hospitality space.

Great Indian Food Experience in the Heart of Adelaide

We had a great experience enjoying Indian food in the Adelaide CBD. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating — and even outside, they’ve installed a good heater system, which makes it comfortable during the cold winter nights.

I especially enjoyed trying a variety of Indian stews and their garlic naan, which was fresh, soft, and full of flavour. The food overall was delicious and satisfying — definitely a place worth visiting for authentic Indian cuisine!

Our first time dining at Daughter In Law in Adelaide. We chose the ‘Feed me’ menu for $55pp. Absolutely delicious food, full of flavour and beautifully presented. The team handled dietary requirements very well and asked if either of us had any allergies before taking our order which made me feel very reassured as I do have an allergy to Peanuts & Walnuts – I was very impressed with the customer service! The atmosphere was vibrant, fun and the music playlist was great! We will definitely be coming back.

Things I Find

We didn’t have a booking on a very busy fringe night but we managed to get a table. We were positioned in the sun but I can’t complain for no booking.
My wife and i ordered the just feed me menu and The food came out real quick. My 2 kids ordered. One is a picky eater, but she really enjoyed the rice and satay chicken.
We had a mixture of hot, spicy, no spice, and they all hit the spot really well. What could of made this experience better would of been a pint of Indian beer but it was out of order.
This whole experience was on the pricey side but I didn’t mind. I probably woyld come more often if it was cheaper but again it didn’t effect our time there. I recommend going to try.

Unbelievably we were able to get a last minute booking for a table of 4 on a Friday night during Fringe 2025 so understandably the restaurant was packed, however the service was excellent with menus, drinks and food all brought out with only a very short wait.
The staff were all super friendly and efficient, even taking the time to explain different dishes despite the very busy night. We also had some very specific dietries which our waitress was extremely attentive to and more than happy to accommodate for.
The kitchen ran like clockwork with our meals all coming out at the same time. Food was delicious with our personal standouts being Chicken Tikka, Balls of Happiness, and the cardamom icecream (a MUST try!).
Also, the decor is stunning!
We are looking forward to coming again.

️ A True Indian-Nepali Feast in the Heart of Adelaide!

This restaurant stands out as one of the best Indian-Nepali dining experiences I’ve had — a true cultural feast right in the heart of Adelaide city.

Finally, a place that offers an authentic variety of Nepali and Indian dishes, cooked with care and precision. Many items are slow-cooked in traditional clay pots or bamboo tubes, bringing out deep, earthy flavours. The spice level is gentle, making it perfect for those who enjoy subtle but rich taste.

On Friday or Saturday nights, you might be lucky enough to catch live music, which adds a beautiful touch to the already warm and vibrant atmosphere.

The restaurant is clean, well-decorated, and welcoming, with plenty of attentive staff always ready to help. The menu includes English descriptions while proudly retaining the original Nepali and Indian names, which I really appreciated as part of the cultural experience.

Highly recommended: Try the dumplings cooked in clay pots or bamboo tubes — a standout dish with texture and flavour you won’t forget.

Considering the premium quality, authentic preparation, and overall cleanliness, the prices are very reasonable. It’s rare to find this level of food and service at such a fair cost.

All in all, this place has become my top cultural food experience in Adelaide — highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy a rich, delicious, and soulful meal.

Food is fine.

Service was genuinely hilariously poor. Server basically didn’t know how to take our orders, stared at us blankly after saying what we wanted. Had to run away to serve other people between taking our drink, entree, and main meal.

Took about an hour to come out.

Server had forgotten what we ordered, said it was butter chicken, then lamb, then the vegetarian plate. The answer to which one was it was “taste it and you will know. It’s the vegetarian option bro….

Asked for further drinks, and we were forgotten about, has to ask twice.

Gentleman next to us nearly walked out after waiting so long.

Seems like it’s changed hands recently, try elsewhere.

I can’t express how amazing this restaurant is. The food was absolutely phenomenal and the service went above and beyond anything you’d ever expect. My dad and I came here during our 2 night stop in Adelaide on the first night and decided we didn’t want to eat anywhere else when it came to the last night of our trip.

We’d both like to thank all the staff for their generous hospitality and especially Lee whose knowledge and charm made it the best restaurant experience I’ve personally had in any restaurant in Australia. You can see why they’ve been open for so long!

Can’t wait for my next trip to SA now!

We were looking for somewhere close to our hotel for a quick dinner on Saturday night and saw this place just around the corner. The entrance is a bit of a secret, a doorway leads downstairs. We were not expecting much but my goodness how wrong we were. We didn’t book but were quickly accommodated by the friendly, smiling host. The decor was restrained but appealing, the food was delicious. As we enjoyed our meal, what stood out was how the host greeted each guest, welcoming each person as if they were old friends and family. If you are even in the city, it’s worth finding this gem, on the Mall side of Hindmarsh Square.

I really enjoy going to this restaurant. Being underground it feels a bit like stepping into a speak-easy, with low lighting, dark wood decor and art on the walls. The staff are outstanding, they really add to the warm atmosphere. We’d popped in early evening without a booking and they were able to squeeze us in on a busy Friday night. The food is excellent and the wine list is well matched to the dishes.

The food was great. Our server was lovely. The Garlic Nan was a treat and the live music was delightful. We were interested in getting the potato entrees but opted for something our waiter suggested as it was similar. The special entree was tasty but was also three times the price of what we were going to get, so we got a shock when time to pay the bill.

We 4 really enjoyed the “feed me” option…our waiter talked us through the choices and they were delicious. Loved the calamari rings and the sauces on all our meals were outstanding. Recommend and will return ( and not a Butter Chicken in sight ! )

City Indian Cuisine is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic and flavourful North Indian food. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with the delightful aroma of spices. We started with the samosas, which were perfectly crisp and served with minty yogurt chutney. There are many options to choose from, but I couldn’t resist trying all of them. I ended up having rice with three delicious curries. I also have to mention the wholemeal aloo parantha, made on special request, which was simply great. The friendly staff and prompt service made this a great experience. It’s my favorite go-to for Indian food in the city.

One of the better street food deals in town, not too spicy but delicious curries. Takeaway meat and vegetables plus pickles and naan bread by the Torrens river is my suggestion if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle

I dined in recently and liked the food (small rice and 2 curries-$10). Today I wanted to take away the same and turns out take away portions and prices are different (that’s okay). So the staff suggested to match a small dine in size, go for a medium take away. I even asked the staff if it would be possible to genuinely put the same dine in quantity in any box and I would be happy to pay for it, which they denied. But then shouldn’t the prices be the same if the portion size is the same? Especially since I’m not even eating in the restaurant??? But the take way medium is almost $3 more than the dine in small?? (still 100% smaller than the dine in small – there’s no way the portion of rice given in dine in and probably two non veg curries could fit in) How does this pricing make sense? Complete scam! Please fix this.
PS. When did I ever say I want to take the plate away with me? Smh

Had a great experience at an Indian restaurant recently! The naan was soft and delicious, and the thali offered a wonderful variety of flavors. The food was amazing, but unfortunately, the staff’s communication could have been better. Despite that, I still enjoyed the meal and will definitely consider returning for the food.

The butter chicken and naan were absolutely amazing. The chicken was tender and cooked perfectly, coated in a rich, creamy sauce full of flavor. The spices balanced beautifully, giving every bite a warm, comforting taste. The naan was soft, fluffy, and slightly crisp on the edges, perfect for scooping up the sauce. Together, they made the perfect meal.

Staff were very polite aswell, kindly asked me what I would like.

Definitely will be eating very often

A very authentic Indian restaurant with absolutely delicious curries. The staff there are incredibly friendly and accomodating. Smiley service and so welcoming. Food served fast and can accommodate to different tastes and levels of spice. You absolutely need to try the cheese naan bread. It’s like no other! We will most definitely be back for authentic and tasty curry. Oh and the mango lassi was to die for!

Was in Adelaide for a week and we chanced upon this restaurant and my god is this restaurant a hidden gem. I have no idea how the frick a line isn’t formed outside to eat this delicious food. I ordered chicken biryani and my misso ordered veg biryani and this was hands down the best Biryani I have had in Australia… I am now sad as they don’t have a branch in Melbourne…
I attached a pic of the plates they served and it’s empty .. not a single grain of rice left…

Very disappointed with this food quality. The naan and roti were very rubbery and chewy and tasted stale. All the curries were covered in a thick layer of oil that we had to scoop out before eating.

We snagged a Groupon deal for some grub, getting chicken tikka, rita, and papadum to kick things off. The chicken’s got that perfect marinade, Rita’s a double dose of refreshment, and the papadum? Crispy heaven. For mains, we picked beef masala and chicken curry – both winners with well-balanced flavors. Beef’s got that savory kick, while the chicken’s got a hint of sweetness from tomatoes. The meat? Super tender. Rice was on point, fragrant, and the plain nan rocked with the curry. Finished it off with homemade mango ice cream – creamy, dreamy, and the crushed pistachio added a nice crunch. Overall, a bang-for-your-buck and oh-so-yummy experience!

I enjoyed this restaurant as it was quiet, quick and easy to order food. It was my last day in Adelaide and I came across this place. I ordered the butter chicken and some garlic naan. Both of the items were ok but nothing special. I found the butter chicken curry was very thin and almost soupy. I wish the sauce base was thicker. The chicken pieces were good and tasty and not too hard so that was a bonus. I also didn’t like how oily the garlic naan was. The atmosphere of the restaurant could need some improving as well as it felt very lack luster. Overall it was an ok experience.

I had an amazing dining experience at Indian Delights, located at 445 Pulteney St, Adelaide SA 5000. The garlic naan was incredibly soft, and delicious the perfect start to the meal. The butter chicken was full of rich, creamy flavour and cooked to perfection. The wings were a real standout, packed with bold spices and unforgettable taste. Everything paired perfectly with a cold Indian beer a fantastic combination! Even though I’ve never been to India, the food here made me feel like I was already there. It’s that authentic and flavorful. On top of the great food, the staff were so friendly and caring, making the whole experience even better. The service was warm and welcoming from start to finish. Highly recommend this spot if you want to taste real Indian cuisine without leaving Adelaide.

We had a really delicious meal here. I had read some of the previous reviews about inconsistent service and food being too spicy but decided to take a chance because it smelled so good walking past. I believe staff have taken these reviews on board because we were asked twice during our meal (after entrees and during mains) how our food was and if the spice level was good (which it was). A nice touch and good attention to detail. Personally I have been to other more Instagram worthy Indian restaurants down the road and preferred the style of food here. The pani puri was especially tasty.

Nice dinner on a busy Friday night.

They took our names so we could split the bill really easily and asked how spicy we’d like the curries. Probably should have not gone mild as it was super mild and could have done with a bit more of a kick.

Ok portions but a little on the smaller side. Well presented and tasty.

My new fav Indian restaurant in Adelaide.

Open kitchen and got to chat with the chef re recommendations and was very happy with the result.

Service wise, not only friendly however also offered a taste of the wine before selection which was much appreciated.

Nice touch was the cheff personally taking time to ask about my meal 🙂

Other bonus – toilets on premises rather having the trudge down alleyways with key tied to a kitchen implement I have found at other establishments (pet hate)

I’ll be back when next in town and definitely recomend.

Service excellent and without fault. First glass of wine was a bit mean in height for $12 a glass, but second was better! Food was very good with particularly the rice.Only small comment is that the Papadums were cold and not crisp! Need to be freshly cooked and then served. Now, my only real complaint is the noise due to hard floors and no soft furniture to absorb the sound. But I would certainly consider again.
