Receive email over a week later, saying I do not me their criteria of work. In there template response it implies we are here to assist people? I am a dentist practising in Adelaide and came to ClearTax to see Van for guidance regarding quarterly BAS and Tax returns. Unfortunately my experience was quite poor and I cannot recommend the services of ClearTax in Adelaide.

To start with, during the session, Van gave clearly wrong information regarding the GST code. Normally dental and medical services provided by a sole trader practitioner are exempt from GST taxes, and most accountants will be able to tell you this immediately. Instead for 30 minutes I had to convince Van that this was the case, and it ended up being a session that felt like I was educating her on the basics of GST for healthcare professionals instead of the other way around. Following her advice I would be overpaying an extra 10% of my income to GST, and even I could immediately tell this was a grossly negligent error. In addition, even on standard pay structures for sole trader healthcare professionals, her understanding was shakier than my own rudimentary knowledge. Only in future meetings with other accountants did I realize how misinformed her counsel to me was.

To add Insult to injury, I was charged a $132 fee just for an initial 1 hour consultation. I have consulted with other accountants before, and recently, and have received much more clarity and information in sessions that are completely free, and am only charged during appointments to consolidate BAS or Tax Returns. While I would normally not mind paying for time spent (an accountants time is very valuable), when I receive incompetent counsel and misinformation, and probably know more about the pay structure compared to the accountant, it feels like I am just paying to waste my time.

Despite my overall negative review, Van herself was a warm, polite and friendly individual. I attended 20 minutes late to the appointment as I misread the time and she was still willing to accommodate a full session with me. For this I am extremely grateful.

Overall, I feel Van may be suitable for customers who are not from a sole trader health professional background, but if you are a doctor or dentist or other allied health professional, I will unfortunately have to advise you to stay away. There are many good accountants in Adelaide that will be able to help you navigate the sometimes difficult sole trader financial environment, and ultimately accurate information and good guidance is what we are paying for.
