I participated in the Mindful Clay Pottery Wheel 8 week workshops at Goodwood. It was a wonderful experience. My friend and I really looked forward to these sessions each week.

Sofie was an amazing teacher. Her whole group demonstrations were inspiring. She spent time watching and helping each of us independently, targeting her support to each of our specific needs. Sofie was patient and showed me things over and over when I was finding things difficult.

Wheel throwing was much harder than I had expected it to be however lots of laughs were had as well as mindful moments. I would definitely recommend! Can’t wait to pick up my final pieces. ♥️

My mum booked a private party for a birthday and told them that she has not been able to confirm numbers yet but wants to book the room/party ahead of time. She was told that to book the room she would have to pay the minimum amount of people (which was 5) to book/secure the room that fits up to 12 people and then she was told she would just have to confirm her final number 10 days before the event. She did this, then got no reply and had to follow up twice. She was met with a response that was we can only accommodate the confirmed 5 and we cannot add anymore people as the room for up to 12 was booked out. ?? How is this possible when she paid a large deposit for the full price of min 5 people to book that room? ( she never confirmed only 5, that was the minimum they said she had to pay to book the 12 person room) It left us with nowhere for the party as we couldn’t just have 5 people attend as the party had 8 people attending. We then booked elsewhere yesterday and have been requesting a refund for a couple of days. Which they refused and twisted their words. Today, after following up for a refund again, they are saying all of a sudden they can find somewhere for the extra people to fit in but they are not offering a refund. This is very unprofessional and not acceptable. They had already cancelled our session as we requested ONLY because they let our room be booked out by others when we had booked that room. Therefore we were not provided with the service we booked for and are entitled to a refund. Very disappointing behaviour and I hope they reach out to her to fix this asap.

Good instructor and enjoyable Pottery Wheel Experience class. You don’t get a say in the colours (blue or red, that’s it) splattered on the white clay; the instructor decides. That was a let down. When I collected the pieces, there was tiny flecks of a colour lol, and was told the kiln didn’t fire properly, so besides looking wonky with the glaze I assume they are now non-food safe. Good class for a night with friends, yes it’s an ‘experience’ so fair enough but there are better pottery courses/ classes.

Janet’s Journey

Very professional, we booked a group session for a night of pottery and wine.
It was so well run, for a first timer, our group thoroughly enjoyed the session. We were talked and shown through step by step of process and instructions were well communicated. Equipment and clay provided in price, just remember to bring an apron and/or a towel.
Look forward to picking up the goods in a few weeks and having a few more pottery sessions.

I booked a session for my sister and I with Es Ceramics as an early Christmas present. Their talented instructors explained the basics and then demonstrated how to create something on the wheel, and assisted when needed. Their instructors were so great – pleasant, friendly, welcoming, kind, and informative. Most people seemed to get the hang of things pretty quickly but I, well I’m a bit of a straggler under normal circumstances, so predictably I managed to repeatedly chop my clay off the wheel accidentally and then one of them would patiently help me get back on track until my next whoops. They were so lovely. I specifically chose Es Ceramics because their class was 3 hours and the others I saw were shorter, and I was so grateful I did because it took away some of the pressure when I was struggling to learn some of the techniques and really made a difference. The atmosphere was great and the workspace is nice. There was a midmorning coffee break where they served us coffee in their gorgeous cups and then we went on to hand-building techniques and created our second piece, which required a little less of the finesse that I lack. All through they explained the process and techniques. I have just picked up our glazed pieces and I’m thrilled They turned out even cuter than I expected – full of character and very unique with a beautiful glaze. Highly recommend the class and think it makes an amazing gift. Would really like to do it again. Many thanks for the great experience.

Incredible and inclusive space to learn then attempt to master the art of pottery. The teachers are great, you end up with beautiful ceramics and the vibe is always just right. The fact that the teachers also produce commercial pottery means their tutelage is a step ahead of some of the other pottery studios in Adelaide

Loved my experience here! You definitely need to book as it was fully booked when I came and people were being turned away due to no space. My suggestion is to know what you want to pick before you come as you have about an hour and a half For your booking which goes fast.
Everything was well explained at the start of the booking.
The coffee was the best I’ve had in a really long time. Will definitely come again.
Only lost a point on atmosphere for being a bit small otherwise it was great!

Mums who need some me time – I’ve found your new sanctuary!
I had the most therapeutic ‘me time’ morning painting a birthday plate for my son’s first birthday.
Pottering Around is a great space with loads of options to choose from (reasonably priced) and plenty of colours to paint with.
Coffee that you get to finish while it’s hot (I forgot what that was like) and as much or as little help and guidance as you need from the lovely ladies that run the store.
Cannot wait to go back!

I had so much fun doing a wheel throwing class today at their pottery workshop in Christies Beach, I made a little clay cup, which was much harder than I thought it would be but so fun! I organised a session hosted by the lovely Christy for my partners birthday. The session was filled with a peaceful and calming sentiment, that slowly guided the pair of us through the art of pottery, as first timers. While my partner was a lot more of natural, Christy noticed how in parts I was struggling and adjusted her teaching style to suit my needs. She began the session by demonstrating the 3-4 main methods of mastering the clay wheel and then we went onto create how ever many items we could within the session depending on time and expertise! We were lucky enough to make 3 each including a bowl, mug and dish. Along the session she welcomed lovely conversation and also had the chance to drink some tea with her! Thank you again Christy for welcoming us into your studio, we had a great time!

Sixteenos Art Studio seems to offer a promising avenue for creative exploration. From what I understand, their pottery classes provide hands-on learning experiences, with instructors who are patient and helpful in guiding participants through the wheel throwing process. Their commitment to assisting students is a real asset.

However, it appears that communication and logistical support require attention. There have been reports of difficulties with piece pick-up and timely responses to inquiries, which could impact the overall customer experience. Improved organization and communication channels, along with addressing scheduling challenges, are essential for a more seamless process.

What a remarkable turnaround! Following my previous review, the art studio went above and beyond to rectify the situation. The staff promptly and personally delivered the missing items to me. Moreover, they generously gifted me six stunning pottery pieces, enhancing my overall experience. It’s evident that they value their customers and strive for excellence. Our group had been booked in for a Sunday morning. But the person who runs this was a no show. It was also pretty cold waiting outside too. Which was a pity as we were looking forward to it so much & some of us travelled a fair distance to be there for an 11am start. I don’t think that any of our group will be in a hurry to come and do anything at this studio ever again.

While the actual workshop itself was enjoyable, my partner and I have had an absolutely horrendous experience trying to get our pieces picked up.

We’ve continuously tried to contact the studio and the teacher to check if the mugs were ready for pick up and we have only had one response to this day telling us they’ll check if the pieces are ready. Mind you we were told they would be ready by mid-December, and we have not heard anything back since.
It honestly feels like a scam, and I would not recommend anyone to this studio as the pickup process after the class is disorganized, abysmal, and incredibly frustrating.
It is not worth your time, money, or energy

My friend booked a paint and sip so we could spend some quality time together for my 40th.

The studio sent a message requesting to move the date to another weekend.

My friend lives a 3 hour drive away, and this is very frustrating. Other dates dont work for us.

I am probably also bitter as this is our third attempt at doing one of these.

My last experience here was not great- the person leading the class was always distracted and did not always attend to those in class. They also lost my pottery piece, told me they will look for it but never gave me updates even after several follow ups from me. Everytime I went in person they said they will reach out when they find my piece but never did and did not continue replying to my email, plus no answer when I tried to call. The lady also said if they can’t find it then I can re-do a class to make another one but again I didn’t hear back. Very disappointing especially since the class itself is quite pricey. Safe to say this experience has given this studio a poor image to me and my friends that attended the class and I don’t know if I’d ever go back or recommend this to anyone.

Wichitaporn Daengprok

I am writing to express my disappointment with my recent experience at your studio regarding the rescheduling policy for a pottery class my partner and I booked.

We were very much looking forward to attending the class together and enjoying a creative experience. Unfortunately, on the day of the class, my partner fell ill with flu symptoms. While I understand that your policy requires rescheduling or cancellations to be made at least three days in advance, illness is unpredictable, and we had no way of foreseeing this situation.

Out of consideration for the teacher and other participants, we decided not to attend, as we did not want to risk spreading germs or disrupt the class with symptoms such as coughing. I reached out early in the morning via messages and multiple phone calls to inform the studio and request a reschedule. However, I did not receive any response until just 30 minutes before the class, at which point I was informed that rescheduling or a refund was not possible.

I am extremely disappointed by the lack of understanding and flexibility shown in this situation. While I respect the importance of policies, I believe that genuine and unavoidable circumstances—such as illness—should be met with a level of compassion. A more accommodating approach would not only provide a better customer experience but also encourage responsible behavior from attendees who prioritize public health.

I hope you will take this feedback into consideration and review your policies to allow for greater flexibility in cases of unexpected illness. I would appreciate the opportunity to receive a full refund. I look forward to your response.

Thank you.

    Wheel Throwing Courses

For those interested in using the potter’s wheel, wheel throwing courses are frequently available. These classes teach the basics of centering clay, pulling walls, and shaping pots on the wheel, progressing to more complex forms.

    Hand-Building Workshops

Ceramic classes often provide hand-building workshops for students who prefer to work with their hands. These workshops focus on techniques like slab building, coil building, and sculpting, allowing for creative exploration without the use of a pottery wheel.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ceramic Classes in Adelaide

What age groups are typically catered to in ceramic classes?

Ceramic classes in Adelaide generally offer instruction for a wide range of ages. Many studios have specific programs for children (often starting around age 8 or 9), teenagers, and adults. Some offer family classes or workshops designed for multiple generations to learn together. The specific age ranges and skill levels catered to will vary from studio to studio, so checking the details before enrolling is essential.

What skill levels are suitable for ceramic classes?

Most studios welcome participants of all skill levels. Many classes are structured for beginners, assuming no prior experience. However, some might offer intermediate or advanced workshops for those with some existing knowledge and a desire to refine their techniques. It’s best to check the class description to determine the recommended experience level.

What equipment and materials are usually provided?

Most reputable ceramic studios will provide all the essential equipment and materials, including clay, glazes, tools, and access to pottery wheels and kilns. However, some studios may offer the option to purchase your own specific tools or clay if you prefer. Always confirm with the studio beforehand to understand exactly what's included in the course fee and what you might need to bring yourself.

What types of ceramic techniques are commonly taught?

Commonly taught techniques include hand-building (using methods like pinch pots, coil building, and slab construction), wheel throwing (using a pottery wheel to shape clay), and sometimes, more specialized techniques like Raku firing or crystalline glazing. The range of techniques will vary significantly depending on the class type and the instructor's specialization.

How long do typical ceramic classes or courses last?

The duration of ceramic classes can vary greatly. You might find short, one-off workshops lasting a few hours, or longer, multi-week courses that span several weeks. Course durations are often structured around the need for pieces to be fired and glazed – a process that requires time. It’s vital to check the time commitment before signing up.

What is the firing process, and how does it work?

The firing process is crucial in ceramics. Clay pieces are initially fired in a bisque firing to harden them. After glazing, a second, higher-temperature glaze firing melts the glaze, creating a durable and often decorative finish. The firing is typically handled by the studio, using specialized kilns. Understanding the timing involved with these firings is key to planning your projects.

Are there opportunities to glaze my own pieces?

Some studios offer the opportunity for students to glaze their own pieces, providing a selection of glazes and guidance on application techniques. However, others may handle the glazing process to ensure consistent quality and safety. Confirming whether you’ll have this creative input is a good question to ask when researching studios.

How much do ceramic classes in Adelaide typically cost?

The cost of ceramic classes in Adelaide can vary based on the class length, skill level, and studio facilities. Short workshops might range from $50 to $100, while longer courses can cost $200 or more. Material fees, kiln firing charges, and glaze options may also affect the overall price. Comparing prices across different studios is recommended.

What safety precautions are typically followed in ceramic studios?

Ceramic studios prioritize safety. Common precautions include proper ventilation, dust control measures, the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (like masks and gloves), and safe handling procedures for chemicals and kilns. Studios should have established safety protocols and be prepared to share them with students.

Can I purchase my finished pieces from the studio?

Whether you can purchase your finished pieces from the studio varies. Some studios offer a service to fire and glaze pieces that you’re unable to complete yourself. Others may only sell pieces created during structured classes. Always check the studio's policies on selling or taking home finished work.
